Profile

Before my full-time scientific occupation, I practised as an architect in Turkey. I started working in architectural offices in 2004 and held various positions for twelve years. I mainly worked in restoration offices, which focused on preservation, restoration, and adaptive reuse of architectural heritage objects.

Between 2017 and 2024, I worked in the 鶹Ƶ Centre of Architecture and Urbanism at the Institute of Architecture and Construction at Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania.

My research primarily focuses on the intersection of 7 topics.

1) Cultural memory
2) Perception
3) Impact of built environment on society
4) Sustainability
5) Preservation of cultural heritage
6) Adaptive reuse
7) Early 20th-century architecture

Even though my PhD is in the History and Theory of Art and Architecture, I am mainly interested in using a wide spectrum of research methodologies, from digital humanities (biometrical measurement tools) to community engagement methods, to perform analysis and understand heritage and architectural design. My PhD thesis, which was titled "The Role of Cultural Memory in the Strategies of Adaptive re-use of Built Heritage: A Case Study of the Modern Movement", was awarded the Best Doctoral Thesis in the category of Social Sciences and Humanities by Baltic University Programme in 2021 due to the innovative approaches used while conducting the research, such as the eye-tracking glasses.

I have been a member of the editorial board at the Journal of Sustainable Architecture and Civil Engineering of Kaunas University of Technology since 2022.

Qualifications
  • BArch Architecture
  • MSc Restoration and Conservation of Cultural Heritage
  • PhD History and Theory of Art and Architecture
鶹Ƶ interests

The focus of my research is the perception of cultural heritage, specifically the heritage of the early 20th century. I mainly work on the characteristics of architectural objects and architectural heritage, which affect the perception of the observers. Furthermore, I focus on the impact of cultural memory and cultural background on perceiving architecture and the heritage of others.

My research is interdisciplinary and based on using different methodologies to measure and understand people’s perceptions of the physical and aesthetic qualities of architecture and heritage objects. I am also interested in sustainability aesthetics and biophilic design. While architecture can be perceived differently due to the background or emotional status of the observers, it can also affect observers both directly and indirectly. Therefore, I believe that research on the humanities perspective of architecture is essential for understanding the heritage and creating strategies for architectural design.
