Chris’ MBiolSci in Zoology has given him the chance to get hands-on experience in an active research lab working alongside PhD students. It also gave him the opportunity to carry out his own research project while on a field trip in Wales.

“I am currently in my fourth year of an integrated Masters in Zoology at the University of Sheffield. During this final year, I have worked within an evolutionary development laboratory investigating the gene networks which govern the final form of a species. This has been a fantastic opportunity for myself to obtain plenty of hands-on experience in an active research lab, integrating myself amongst fellow Masters and PhD students. One of the reasons I would recommend the integrated Masters course here at Sheffield is that students will be exposed to both learning and doing science. I have quickly realised that the two involve very different skills, and I believe that having experience of both was crucial in allowing me to secure a PhD in genetics next year at the University of East Anglia.

â€œAnother fantastic aspect of studying here at Sheffield is the freedom that is granted. During my first year, I had the opportunity to attend lectures of subjects I had never studied before, a fantastic way to explore an area of interest outside my full-time degree. Even by second year I was trusted to generate and complete my own research project whilst on a Welsh field trip. I have also helped manage a student-led project creating science podcast shows for the general public, which has all been made possible due to the fantastic recording facilities found within our Students’ Union. Overall, Sheffield is a fantastic place at allowing its students to form a well-rounded education where individuals get out as much as they put in.â€
